Below is a series of short (30-60 minute) education presentations on a wide range of lighting control topics. Numerous new presentations will be added by the end of 2025 and into 2026, so be sure to check back regularly.
Introduction to Lighting Control
Learn how to:
- 1) explain the functionality and benefits of lighting controls,
- 2) recommend lighting controls to clients based on benefits appropriate for various applications,
- 3) identify lighting control strategies based on inputs and outputs, and 4) match lighting control strategies to applications.

Occupancy and Vacancy Sensors
Learn how to:
- 1) select an appropriate sensor technology based on a given application’s characteristics,
- 2) select appropriate features for the sensor to optimize performance in the given application, and
- 3) apply sensors to spaces based on their characteristics.

Daylight-Responsive Lighting Control
Learn how to:
- 1) identify areas of daylight availability available (or required by energy code) for daylight response control,
- 2) comply with applicable code requirements,
- 3) functionally specify a daylight-responsive lighting control solution, and
- 4) ensure a solution is delivered that satisfies users and owner expectations.

Introduction to Dimming
Learn about:
- 1) the purpose of dimming,
- 2) stepped versus continuous dimming,
- 3) dimming strategies for visual needs and energy management, and
- 4) dimming for various lamp types.

Commissioning and Lighting Controls
- Learn to:
- 1) communicate the benefits of commissioning to project participants,
- 2) comply with commissioning requirements imposed by external agencies such as energy codes,
- 3) conduct lighting controls functional testing, and
- 4) develop documentation that supports effective commissioning.

Tunable-White Lighting
Learn to:
- 1) apply color fundamentals to selection of correlated color temperature and tunable-white lighting,
- 2) select an appropriate color-tuning approach for an application, and
- 3) engage with manufacturers and other project participants to select the most appropriate tunable-white lighting solution.

Luminaire-Level Lighting Controls
Learn:
- 1) the capabilities and benefits of LLLC as a subset of networked lighting controls,
- 2) to differentiate LLLC product solutions in terms of capabilities and cost,
- 3) to match LLLC to appropriate applications, and
- 4) to design lighting and control solutions recognizing the basics of what is required to incorporate LLLC.

A Year with Networked Lighting Controls
Learn to:
- 1) use NLCs based on an understanding of them as a data-producing business tool, not just a technology and
- 2) evaluate projects with an eye for lighting controls that go far beyond energy code compliance and energy cost savings into the realm of data and operations efficiency.

Automatic Plug Load Control
Learn to:
- 1) implement plug load control in energy code-compliant new construction,
- 2) implement appropriate strategies for plug load control based on application characteristics, and
- 3) select appropriate equipment to implement a plug load control strategy as an extension of the lighting control system.

Lighting Control System Design, Part 1: Control Intent
Learn to:
- 1) determine all needs, wants, and requirements related to the lighting control system,
- 2) express the system’s goals and intent within a Control Intent Narrative document,
- 3) integrate the controls design with the lighting design via control zoning, and
- 4) detail the control system’s behavior via a sequence of operations.

Lighting Control System Design, Part 2: Planning and Coordination
Learn to:
- 1) utilize the Control Intent Narrative (CIN) and sequence of operations (SOO) during later design phases,
- 2) understand the different types of modern lighting control systems,
- 3) coordinate the lighting controls design with the luminaire selection and lighting design, and
- 4) specify the various parts of a lighting control system to ensure it satisfies the CIN and SOO.

Lighting Control System Design, Part 3: Installation and Post-Occupancy
Learn to:
- 1) navigate the complex process of estimating, pricing, and quoting a lighting control system,
- 2) understand and respond to the various documents used during the installation phase,
- 3) coordinate the different roles and their required tasks during the installation phase, and
- 4) ensure owners and occupants understand how to use the lighting control system and are satisfied with its operation.

Networked Wireless Lighting Controls
Learn to:
- 1) identify and select components of a wireless lighting control system,
- 2) understand and explain wireless technologies to a project team,
- 3) compare and evaluate wireless control systems, and
- 4) recommend appropriate wireless lighting control solutions for various projects.
