2007 Energy Law Eliminates Sale of Probe-Start Metal Halide Fixtures

The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 contains significant provisions affecting the sale of metal halide lighting fixtures. Starting in 2009, 150-500W metal halide lighting fixtures must contain ballasts that operate at a certain level of efficiency, virtually eliminating probe-start lamps and ballasts from new fixtures. This provision of the 2007 Energy Act essentially makes a Federal standard of efficiency requirements already enacted in California, New York, Arizona, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington.

Congress Extends Commercial Buildings Deduction to 2013

The Energy Policy Act (EPAct) of 2005 created the Commercial Buildings Deduction (CBD), which established an accelerated tax deduction rewarding investment in energy-efficient interior lighting, HVAC/hot water systems and building envelope. Initially set to expire December 31, 2007 and then December 31, 2008, the CBD was recently extended by Congress to expire in five years: December 31, 2013.

Advance has announced the launch of an exciting repositioning campaign that will serve to both acknowledge its long-standing position and history as a leader in the ballast industry while firmly reflecting its affiliation to global technology leader and corporate parent Philips. As part of the initiative, Advance will officially become known as Philips Lighting Electronics North America (N.A.) and will adopt Philips Advance as its product brand on all existing electronic and magnetic fluorescent and HID ballasts.

Leviton Regains Unilateral Control of Family-Owned Business with $300 Million Stock Purchase

Leviton has announced the purchase of a 29.1% minority interest in its stock that has been held by Thomas & Betts Corporation since 1994, for a cash tender of approximately $300 million. Leviton’s purchase of Thomas & Betts’ minority interest in its stock secures its long-term strategic objective of the restoration of total ownership of the company to the Leviton family and continuation of its policy to remain privately held and operated.
