The Lighting Control Innovation Award was created in 2011 as part of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards program, which recognizes professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. LCA is proud to sponsor the Lighting Control Innovation Award, which recognizes projects that exemplify the effective use of lighting controls in nonresidential applications.
This month, we will explore an innovative installation of lighting controls at the historic Simmons Building in Calgary, Alberta. Design by Designcore Engineering. Photography by Sawyer Photography. Lighting controls by Eaton’s Cooper Industries’ Fifth Light.
The Simmons Building is focal point of East Village. The main floor is shared between the three culinary businesses which creates a unique open concept while maintaining their individual offerings.
The majority of the luminaires utilize 0-10V dimming technology. A mixture of 0-10V, dimming and relay DALI modules were remotely installed and connected to a bus system and to the DALI panel.
The controls design concept was to allow for the individual control of each tenant through one system. A DALI (digital addressable lighting interface) system allowed for this control desired. This is the first restaurant which this manufacturers system was installed. This design required innovation, deep understanding of the technology and careful design.
The system automatically changes the scenes throughout the day based on a programmed schedule. Each tenant has a login to a web DALI interface to each program their space.
A collaboration between the DALI manufacturers, the electrical contractor and our design firm ensured smooth installation.
Prior testing was conducted on selected luminaires ensuring varied dimming modules integrated with the luminaires.
The space was divided into zones controlled through DALI devices. As depicted in the photograph, the monopoint luminaires illuminating the main floor from the open-to-above portion were set to a higher dimming level ensuring desired lighting levels.
Each tenant has their own wallstation(s) located strategically within their space. They can change between four principal scenes and toggle dim up/down. Master ON/OFF controls were installed and operable during a select time window.
We created a sequence of operation outlining the desired programming characteristics. A complete commissioning process was performed prior to occupancy. A small clip is shown. The system has proved very reliable and is simple from the user-end. The clients were very happy and satisfied.
