The Lighting Control Innovation Award was created in 2011 as part of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards program, which recognizes professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. LCA is proud to sponsor the Lighting Control Innovation Award, which recognizes projects that exemplify the effective use of lighting controls in nonresidential applications.
This month, we will explore how a unified lighting control system creates distinct moods and profiles for individual spaces in a high-end retail environment. Design by Jules Gim and Golsana Heshmati of Callison, LLC. Photography by Callison, LLC. Lighting controls by Lutron Electronics (Quantum Light Management System).
Numerous challenges presented themselves for this atypical multilevel watch showroom: create distinct moods for each floor (bright to dark moving from basement to first floor)? implement a lighting scheme that transforms the retail environment for special events space? and integrate lighting details that enhance reflective materials. A flexible dimming system allows the space to transform on multiple levels. After hours, when the space transitions into an event space, the LED lighting is dimmed for dramatic effect.
A faceted glass staircase leads customers upstairs to the VIP floor or down to the Calibre Room below. The staircase creates an illusion that mimics a watch’s mechanisms with hidden linear LED striplighting under each tread. The surrounding fluted glass wall reflects light.
VIP Floor: the lighting level is the lowest at this floor, creating a moody and dramatic experience. Per the client’s request, each floor can be controlled separately for optimal flexibility. Each level has a 5-scene control station which is also linked together for cohesiveness.
VIP Floor: 25W LED striplights vertically edge light glass panels, creating continuity between the store’s main level and the VIP floor.
At the VIP lounge, selective accent and cove lighting create a sophisticated, refined environment.
Downstairs, the brighter light level in the Calibre Room complements the high-energy space’s lighter material palette. The wood-slat walls have multiple layers of integrated LED striplighting behind and in front to create visual interest.
In the Calibre Room’s service lounge, programmable RGB LED strip lighting integrated into the black carbon fiber wall creates movement and a high-tech dynamic effect. The RBG fixture seamlessly integrates into the specified dimming system. This LED effect reflects in the nearby fluted glass wall staircase.
Ground Floor: the dimmable lighting system transforms the store from day to night.
