I remember when IECC's lighting section was very simplified. I notice that it is now becoming very similar to Title 24, except for the residential section, which is still a humungous loophole. But in commercial lighting, the similarity is very important to note, especially the daylighting, controls and power density requirements.

I worry, however, about the simplified assumption that lighting can always be cut 30% by power (watts). This kind of thinking is wrong and dangerous. Until there is an improvement in lighting system efficiency, the power numbers are very close the minimum needed to meet IES HB10 recommendations. Energy savings will have to come increasingly from controls, and not from reducing power alone.

I have LED reps selling the concept that 2' and 4' LED lamps are the same or close enough wattage to a dimmed 2' and 4' fluorescent but are as bright as those lamps when on full wattage, so that an occupancy sensor is not necessary.

Just leaving LED fixtures on full bright achieves the same savings as a bi-level fixture.

What would your comment be?

Thanks!

The CLTC study included 8 offices, which is not a suitable size sample to publish any data. In my small company, people prefer different desktop lighting levels, varying from 40 to 120 fc.
There will be significant differences in the 8 people (8 offices), and this was not taken into account.
Let us be more professional with our 'studies.'

Nice to see that the lighting controls manufacturers were able to sit on the Code writing panel to increase their business by expanding what is Code minimum. How about we write the Code to require the lighting controls to be simple rather than needing an 8-hour training course to turn the lights on and off.

HOW DO YOU ACCOMODATE REQUIRED FOOTCANDLE LEVELS IN FACILITIES THROUGHOUT AMERICA THAT CAN USE THE SUN DURING THE DAY BUT WILL NOT HAVE ANY LIGHT AT NIGHT UNLESS
COMMERCIAL LIGHT FIXTURES ARE UTILIZED.
