The Lighting Control Innovation Award was created in 2011 as part of the Illuminating Engineering Society’s Illumination Awards program, which recognizes professionalism, ingenuity and originality in lighting design. LCA is proud to sponsor the Lighting Control Innovation Award, which recognizes projects that exemplify the effective use of lighting controls.
This month, we explore a robust lighting control solution installed at a winery in Fairfield, CA. Lighting control design by EJA Lighting Design, Inc. Photography by Patrik Argast.
Family-owned Caymus-Suisun Winery is not only a showcase for exquisite wine expertise, it has become a second home to the Wagner family. Suisun Valley is a legally protected agricultural preserve and has a rich history of small privately-owned farms yet remains largely undiscovered by the wine making industry. The Caymus-Suisun Winery is a unique locale—a hidden gem with state-of-the-art architecture, blending with its environment in daylight and emerging as a lantern after dusk, attracting visitors into an aesthetically harmonious experience.
The lighting design challenge: create innovative lighting solutions for the 9000 ft² multi-functional property, with seamless transition from interior to exterior spaces, enhancement of the architectural design and integration with the natural environment. In addition, lighting solutions were required to be ultimately controllable, facilitate ease of use, meet all compliance requirements, maximize energy efficiency, be easily maintained and offer expandability.
Caymus-Suisun Winery hosts two distinct areas—the Reception/Retail wing and the Tasting Pavilion. The lighting design team worked extensively with the Wagner family, architects, and engineers to create unique and flexible lighting systems, from functional retail to charismatic hospitality. Tunable and preset zones set the scene for small private parties as well as the general public event spaces, and blend indoor/outdoor spaces through graduated, indirect lighting solutions. Textured surfaces, sculptures and art works necessitated custom lighting design, while fusing with the overall ambience. Highly controllable systems through a touch-screen interface offer pre-programmed settings to control glare and contrast ratios, maximizing visual comfort from dawn until dusk, while meeting Dark Sky guidelines and preserving pastoral integrity. LED long life fixtures, daylight and occupancy sensors plus time clocks throughout, ensure exquisite ambience within Cal T-24 compliance.
The following photographic tour guides you through Caymus-Suisun Winery, relating the overall project story, and subsequent lighting solutions.

App control of the entire facility is achieved through a fully integrated system, with RGBW balance, astronomical time clocks, occupancy and daylight sensors.

The entire facility utilizes long-life LED with easy access for maintainability. Individual scene settings are controlled via central App control panel.

All systems are designed for expansion and ease of maintenance. Tunable white and RGBW zones offer flexibility and control within Dark Sky and California Title 24 compliance.
